Kyle Purvis and Brian Nester waged an epic battle for the ages in an effort to claim the coveted Winchester Rifle in one of the of the Crown Jewels of Modified Racing in the US, the 19th Annual Run For The Gun 50 at the legendary high-banks of Winchester Speedway (IN).
When all was said and done, Purvis, a 4x Winner of the #RunForTheGun50 (2021, 2020, 2017, 2014) going into the event, added a 5th Rifle to his collection as the 37-year-old from Marion, OH, in his #13 Brookwood Builders / DG Performance machine, finally passed race long leader, Nester, with 7 Laps to go to score the $5,000 payday.
The former 2x Midwest Modified Tour Presented by Wheeler Trucking Champion (#MMTpbWT) (2019, 2018), who earlier in the afternoon, Won the Economy Auto Parts Fast Qualifier Award, started 5th and soon found himself on the back bumper of Nester, who started on the outside of the front row after the Inversion Redraw.
What ensued next in the race that only drew one Caution Flag and saw the half-century grind go the last 45 laps caution free, was a battle that won't soon be forgotten between two of the very best #OpenWheelWarriors of the modern era. In the end, Purvis took the lead and hung on for his 12th career Victory as Nester settled for Second
Matt Dimit, who already Clinched his 2nd consecutive #MMTpbWT Championship before the Weekend had started, capped off his back-to-back Title winning season with the final podium position in 3rd.
The 33-year-old from Fort Wayne, IN, in his #7 Dennis Craft Construction / Burkett Nester Racecars entry, never finished worse than 4⃣th all season long in #MMTpbWT competition.
Pole-Sitter, Tim Burkett was 4th as Inline Tube Rookie of the Race, Luke Warhurst completed the Top 5 with a career high finish. 2024 World Stock Car Festival Winner in Winchester, IN, Wayne Chinn was 6th.
Matt Maurer earned the Jim Gray's Cottage Care Hard-Charger Award with his 16th to 7th place run while 2009 Tour Champion, Scotty Tomasik, 1998 Tour Champion, Jeff Lane and Thomas Mays finished off the Final Top 10.
J.J. Schafer, in the #68 Wakarusa Heavy Equipment Sales and Rental / FLF Racecars rode, finished 11th, which was good enough to give the 32-year-old from Bremen, IN, the 2024 Inline Tube Rookie of the Year Title.
