Wrecked Race Cars Tell Story of Michigan Drivers at World Series
New Smyrna Beach, FL (Monday, February 8, 2020) - Sunday night in Florida featured two tracks in action as the 2021 Florida Speedweeks hits full stride. At Volusia Speedway Park, the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars saw a dramatic show alongside the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds. Plus, the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing continues from New Smyrna Speedway.
Donny Schatz looked to be in line to pick up his 300th career World of Outlaws victory during Sunday night's program, but a faulty ignition box stood between he and history. Surviving multiple cautions and restarts, Schatz was virtually untouchable throughout the entire event. In fact, the best race revolved behind him between Logan Schuchart and Corey Eliason for the runner-up position; that is until Schatz slowed on the backstretch with just two laps remaining. That handed the lead over to Schuchart who cruised home for the win.
DIRTcar UMP Modifieds battled for starting spots in Monday's grand finale from Volusia during a pair of qualifier races. Originally, just one was scheduled, however, Saturday's qualifier was moved to Sunday due to weather. The top-10 finishers from each of the Qualifiers have now been locked into Monday’s $5,000-to-win Gator Championship Feature; the top-five will redraw for their starting spots before the Feature Monday. Everyone else will be placed into a Last Chance Showdown event to try and get one of eight remaining spots on the grid of the big show.
It was a tough night for the Great Lakes Region drivers at New Smyrna Speedway. Young Modified driver, Scottie Lamp was the first victim, finding a bent pushrod in his back-up engine after the races Saturday night. Then, coming to the green on Sunday evening, Travis Eddy was a victim of contact down the front stretch when polesitter, Tim Moore broke traction and slammed into Eddy, sending him into the outside wall and out of the race. Then, Sparta, Michigan native, Andrew Scheid wrecked out of the Pro Late Model race after a break failure sent him into the turn one wall.
