Michigan's Spalding Goes Runner Up For Second Night in a Row
De Leon Springs, FL (Thursday, February 4, 2021) - The racing world's attention turned almost exclusively to Volusia Speedway Park on Wednesday night with the second night of the 50th edition of the DIRTcar Nationals. Nearly 100 DIRTcar UMP Modifieds were on hand alongside over 30 410 sprint cars with the Ollie's Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions.
Due to the overwhelming amount of Modifieds, DIRTcar officials determined they would run a pair of feature events on Wednesday night. In Feature number one, Nick Allen and Lucas Lee led the field to the green flag, but just five laps later, Tyler Nicely came from his third starting spot to the front. Despite restarts, Nicely was able to hold on for his fourth career DIRTcar Nationals win, fending off Michigan native, Curt Spalding for the win. For Spalding, it's the second time in as many races he has been a silver medalist on the podium.
The second race of the night featured David Stremme and Nick Hoffman on the front row, with Stremme using his pole starting spot to jump to the early lead. Just three laps in, Hoffman tip-toed around the bottom of the race track and passed Stremme for the top spot, setting sights on his second win in a row. 17 laps later, that's how it unfolded - Hoffman collecting his second 'Gater in two days in Volusia.
The kickoff to the night was the thrilling 25 lap ASCoC feature. After three attempts at a race start, the field roared into turns one and two with a slide-job into the wall from Sheldon Haudenschild - he was able to continue down the backstretch, but Brian Brown raced on with the lead. It wasn't long before Brown was challenged by Brad Sweet for the lead; "The Big Cat" held the top spot just seven laps into the event before he was challenged by a fellow World of Outlaws Champion, Donny Schatz. The driver who has already won two ASCoC races this season used the bottom of the race track to take the lead with 13 to go. With 11 laps to go, Schatz survived a restart that put four cars in contention for the second spot with Sweet holding off a charge from Haudenschild, David Gravel and Logan Schuchart. Sweet would shake out as the runner up until lap four when virtually out of nowhere, Schuchart drove to the bottom of turn one and threw a massive slider for the position. One lap later, he pulled the same move on Schatz and went on to collect his second career ASCoC win.
Tonight, the ASCoC embark on their final race of the Volusia Speedway Park portion of their speedweeks. DIRTcar Modifieds will also accompany the series before the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series come in on Friday.
